Reflecting on the Martyrdom of Charlie Kirk

This will be a little less formal than my previous posts, but I have some thoughts I'd like to share on the recent martyrdom of Charlie Kirk. I first saw Charlie Kirk dialoging with Michael Knowles, and after that I kept seeing his short videos of him explaining reality to liberals on the far left. But beyond that I knew nothing about him. So here is brief run down on who he was;

Charlie Kirk was an evangelical protestant Christian married to an Apostolic Christian. He was a conservative activist and the co-founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) which is a youth-oriented organization focused on conservative ideas, free speech on college campuses, and engaging young people politically. He was a very well known speaker, recognized by many including President Trump.

Sadly, on September 11, 2025, Charlie Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was on stage, under a tent, speaking as part of a live campus event. A shooter, apparently firing from a rooftop about 200 yards away, shot him in the neck. The bullet proved fatal, and Kirk died later that day. FBI worked to find the shooter and now he is in custody. Kirk was only thirty one years old 😢

The Gospel Reading the day of the shooting was Luke 6:27-38, where Jesus is telling the Apostles to "love your enemies, pray for those who mistreat you." While I'm sure most of us are rightfully angry about what happened, myself included, but I also feel sorry for the shooter that he would want to take the life of a father, husband, friend and a guy who spoke the truth. I pray that through the course of his punishment, or whatever deserving consequences he faces, Charlie Kirk’s shooter may experience a change of heart and come to true conversion.

My favorite definition of a saint is a quote by Fr. Benedict Grochell, "A saint is someone who says 'yes' to God and never stops saying 'yes'" Charlie certainly is a saint, as well as a martyr. I'm reminded of the Great canonized Saints, St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Polycarp of Smyrna, St. Justin Martyr, etc. Men and women who spoke the Truth fearlessly. Even at the risk of martyrdom. And their lifes are documented so they can be remembered and we can learn from them. We can learn how to be Christians. How to follow Jesus. One thing that really gets me is his two little ones have to grow up without their daddy. But like the great Canonized Saints his live is well documented. His little ones can see their dad boldly speaking the truth.

My prayers now include his family, friends and coworkers. But I also pray that we can learn from this courageous young guy who was taken far too soon. And I also pray that we can all learn from his unwavering, bold faith. Because if the shooter and sick liberals who are celebrating the death of Charlie think that this will silence the truth, the opposite is to come. The truth will only get louder. ¡Viva Cristo Rey!
